It’s hard to believe when you drive up to the elegant white villa and immaculate gardens at Casa Paladin, that the family behind this wine estate came from very humble origins. The Paladin family owns not only Casa Paladin in the Veneto, but also Bosco del Merlo in Friuli, Castello Bonomi in Franciacorta, Casa Lupo in Valpolicella, Premiata Fattoria di Castelvecchi in Chianti and Poggio Petroso, both in Chianti, Tuscany.
At age 16, Valentino Paladin lost his parents. He farmed to provide for his siblings and became a baker and a grocery in his small village. In 1962, he founded Casa Paladin and started to cultivate grapes to make wine. The villa, located in an historic village near the Roman Postumia road, came later in the 1970s. Located between the eastern Veneto and Friuli near Treviso. Casa Paladin now consists of nearly 100 hectares and produces internationally renowned wines using both native and international varieties.
Valentino Paladin’s message to his children was “Stay humble. You are here for a purpose.” Brothers, Carlo and Roberto Paladin, now continue the family business. During our visit, we spent time with Roberto’s daughter, Martina Paladin, who oversees marketing and international export in Asia and other regions. We learned about Casa Paladin’s philosophy centered around respecting and preserving the land and serving a purpose. One initiative has raised a significant amount of money for breast cancer research.
We toured the estate’s impressive open-air viticulture museum and tasted selections from the different estates. Of note from Casa Paladin we tasted the excellent Salbanello, a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon; “M,” a 100% Malbec; Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie Ramato, Raboso Fiore, a dry sparkling red, and Agricanto, a proprietary liqueur made from Raboso wine laced with macerated cherries, select herbs and spices and grappa.
